Who are we

Domaine Joseph Scharsch is located in the small winegrowing village of Wolxheim, north of the Alsace Wine Route and 20 km southwest of Strasbourg. The earliest known record of the family history dates back to 1755, the year our forebear, a winegrower named Joseph Scharsch, got married. Since then, there have been eight generations of Scharschs. Today, the Domaine has just over 12 hectares of vines, i.e. 41 plots, spread on the hillsides of the 6 surrounding villages. This diversity of terroirs makes it possible to cultivate 9 grape varieties, on places where they fully express. The terroirs of Altenberg, Stirn (Saint Materne), Diewert (Noé) or Unterstupf (Manon) are our greatest pride. PASSIONATE ABOUT RIESLING The village has a long-standing reputation, especially for its Riesling. J.L. Stoltz, a historian specialised in 19th century Alsatian winemaking, notes that : “Before the French Revolution, Riesling wine could only be found in a few privileged spots such as Altenberg bordering on Wolxheim.” The Riesling represents nearly a third of the growing lands. We produce three varieties of Riesling, each with its own distinctive style : Classic, Wolxheim and Grand Cru Altenberg. To enhance the natural fertility of the soil and the health of the vine, the vineyard is organic cultivated since 2009 and biodynamics since 2021 in order to evolve resolutely in a positive and regenerative agriculture. The new cellar built in 2019 above the cellar of our ancestors allows for new quality gains, in particular by ensuring stability of the temperature of the whole cellar, which is conducive to long fermentation with indigenous yeasts and to the ageing of the wines. It also allowed the installation of new vats for maceration of Pinot Noir. The new building combines tradition and modernity. This work from a handful of men and women and the support of the entire family allows the right terroir’s expression in wines combining purity and balance.
