Château Troplong Mondot 2017
Since 2017, the SCOR group has owned this historic property. Today, the former managing director of Château Cos d'Estournel, Aymeric de Gironde, is at the helm of this fine estate. He teams up with oenologist Thomas Duclos to produce increasingly high-quality wines that reflect the terroir of Saint-Emilion. Now covers 33 hectares of which 26 are currently in production. These are planted between 5,500 (prior to 1992) to 6,600 vines/ha (post-1992) and their average age is 20 years. Varietals include 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. These are rooted in cool, clay and limestone soils. Sustainable viticulture is the rule here. In fact, the vineyard is now virtually organically farmed. Much replanting has taken place over the past decade or so with the aim of introducing better rootstocks and varietals better adapted to the different soil types and expositions. In 2017, the fruit was harvested between September 18th and 29th and yields reached 48 hls/ha. The must was fermented in a recently installed battery of truncated, temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks wherein cuvaison ran 21 to 35 days. The aging process was done in 77% new and 23% of one wine-old barrels.
