Arbre à Thé (Tea tree)

Native to Australia, the Tea tree is a large, resistant melaleuca tree. Its bark forms superimposed slabs of wood that peel off like sheets of paper. The tea tree grows in humid regions. Tea tree essential oil is produced by steam distillation of its leafy branches. When Captain Cook discovered the Austral Lands in 1770, he named the tree "tea tree" because his sailors brewed tea from its leaves as a substitute for their tea. For centuries, tea tree leaves have been used by aborigines for their many properties. Rapidly adopted by Europeans on the return of the crew, the tea tree is now found throughout the world wherever the climate is favourable (Mediterranean or oceanic, sheltered from the wind and without heavy frosts), but Australia remains its main growing area. During the Second World War, a bottle of tea tree essential oil was part of the equipment worn by soldiers in the Australian army, who used it as an insect repellent. The green leaves of the tea tree are harvested at the beginning of the austral summer, from November onwards. It takes 70kg of plant mass to obtain 1kg of tea tree essential oil. Originally harvested by hand in the Australian bush, its cultivation is now largely mechanised in plantations. Tea tree essential oil can be used from the age of 3, provided that the precautions for use are observed. The following recipe can be used as a household cleaning product.
