DOMAINE DE VILLARGEAU
Who are we
Following previous peasant generations, Jean-Fernand and François, Marc's father and uncle, created the Domaine de Villargeau in 1991, planting the first white grape vines on flint soils. Marc joined them in 2000, with experiences in France and New Zealand; then his brother Yves, in 2016, back from Peru; They both want to take up together the challenge of developing the family estate. After François, Christophe will complete the team in 2020 and bring his wine experience built in Bordeaux, Champagne and Loire Centre. Today, the vineyards cover a total area of 23 ha / 56.8 acres, and 3/4ths are planted with white Sauvignon grapes. The red and rosé wines are made from Pinot Noir and a small amount of Gamay grape. The historical geological formation of the Loire lowlands explains the diversity of its soils: On the one hand, flint brings out the full potential of the Sauvignon, which is expressed here with daintiness and fruitiness. On the other, the Kimmeridgian marls over a clay-limestone substratum enable the Pinot Noir and Gamay to develop a great balance between body, fruitiness and freshness. Since September 2019, Domaine de Villargeau has been undergoing a conversion to organic wine-growing. The conversion will be asserted for the 2020 and 2021 vintages. The year 2022 will be the estate’s first officially organic vintage.
