This was the year Annette Poulard opened her restaurant and inn at Mont Saint Michel, a medieval citadel built on a rocky outcrop off the coast of Normandy, now a UNESCO world heritage site. A wickedly talented chef, Annette would give her famous butter biscuits to the children of the village and passing travelers. Her creations would go on to be enjoyed across the world and become synonymous with French culinary indulgence.
