DOMAINE LA TOURBEILLE
Who are we
For 100 years our French-American family has cared for the land of La Tourbeille. In 1918 our ancestor Patrice, wounded hero of the Great War, sought a propitious terroir where he could labour in peace. He found his happiness here. The Domaine is a 100-acre estate of oak forests, pastures, streams and vines above the Dordogne River. The vineyard - Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Cabernet Sauvignon - is perched on a sunny hilltop carved by prehistoric caves; the soil is ideal limestone-clay over a flint bedrock which lends a touch of minerality to the wine. The surrounding forests and meadows have been carefully preserved to foster biodiversity. La Tourbeille has produced wine for centuries and Juillac has been a celebrated wine making area since Roman times. The original winery and château on the riverbank were built in the 1700’s. A family journal from 1762 describes how the barrels of highly prized “claret” were rolled down to the river for expedition to Bordeaux and on to England. Now in our 5th generation, we produce our wine in a modern winery next to the vineyard. John & Mary took over from John’s parents in 2011. Geneviève, Julien & Carol and Henri have joined the family business, bringing their youthful enthusiasm, ideas and energy. Our mission is to protect and nurture the land. We work as a family in the vineyard and in winemaking; our methods are artisanal. Mechanical weeding permits us to avoid herbicides and we do not use CMR products. Certification HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale.) We create Red wines of rich red and black fruit flavours and a Rosé that is light, perfumed and crisp. Custom made fermentation tanks allow parcel driven vinification; small scale practices help coax out the qualities of this particular terroir. Gentle maceration and pump-overs smooth the characteristic Bordeaux tannins; manual brassage des lies brings out a touch of gras. Our limited edition Cuvée Le Sceptre is made from selected parcels and aged 12 months in french oak barrels. In this idyllic setting we also welcome guests to our Taverne du Belvedere - a convivial Bar à Tapas with magnificent views of the Dordogne valley. For those interested in the magical-historical setting of La Tourbeille, and the story behind our Rosé “Esprit de Jeanne” - the 5 star novel “Jeanne: Seeds of Infinity” by Mary Bruton Sandifer offers inspiration.
